Abstract

The socio-political transformations, however deep, have not solved out the violation of social and educational rights which generates the inequality derived from poverty. In order to theoretically understand this issue, this paper analyses the way in which the relationship between social inequality, poverty and education is considered from the point of view of the three most important socio-political positions during the XX century and beginning of the XXI – namely, neoliberalism, socialism-marxism and social-democracy. The main ideas supporting each one of these positions are briefly presented here. On their basis, the arguments explaining the causes of social inequality generated by poverty are firstexamined. Then, those social and educational proposals approaching such inequality are analyzed. Finally, each perspective is critically reviewed.
